There is a problem when I install gns3 via the .deb install since the install was upgraded to 0.8.4 and dynamips 0.8.2-community.

Note: if I use the older dynamips (0.8.2 RC?) I don't have the problem

The problem occurs AFTER the install, and on the first run of gns3, when conducting the 3 initial steps - specifically Step 2 which takes you to Edit | Preferences | Dynamips settings [General Settings] tab

When I click the [Test settings] tab, the application hangs, and I see the following output on the terminal (provided I started from the terminal of course)
Code:
[email protected] ~ $ gns3&
[1] 3827
[email protected] ~ $ Unable to create lock file "c7200_i0_lock".
VM default: unable to create instance!
c7200: unable to create instance default!

Curiously, if I try
Code:
GNS3 still hangs, but no messages appear on the terminal

BUT if I run as root (rather than sudo)
Code:
Mint15cinnamon ~ # gns3&

then the test passed the first time I ran it, then I tried it a second time and got the hanging treatment again!

Anyone know what the deal is?

Update:

Tried downloading and compiling 0.2.9 as well.

Same problem.

However, this time I only did steps 1 & 3 (without trying auto calculation for IDLE PC) from the "first run" of GNS3, quit GNS3, started it again and went to Edit | Preferences | Dynamips settings [Dynamips] tab, and hit the [Test Settings] there.

And dynamips started.

So I clicked [Apply] and closed the settings dialog.

Then tried again - and the application hung again.

Further Investigation:
1. When in the "hung" state, it seems that dynamips doesn't even start. A netstat -an | grep 7200 gives no result, but ps ax | grep dynamips gives
ps ax | grep dynamips
8543 ? Sl 0:00 dynamips --help

2. If I build a topology, and go to Edit | Preferences | Dynamips settings [Dynamips] tab, and hit the [Test Settings] I get a warning that the current topology will be deleted, and even though I click OK - nothing more happens - just hangs

I think I've worked it out, but need someone to fix it.

I was thinking about the fact that ps ax | grep dynamips gives
Code:
ps ax | grep dynamips
8543 ? Sl 0:00 dynamips --help

Which indicates to me that when you hit the [Test settings] button, GNS3 executes a command:
Code:
dynamips --help

BUT there is no --help option for dynamips, so dynamips just hangs!

On the older versions of dynamips, (0.2.8 RC3) the command dynamips --help just printed the help, even though there was no "help" option. In fact, with the older versions, you could type any --option, and it would prin the help if it didn't recognise the option.

This looks a bizarre issue... Just tried running dynamips from the command with --help option and it doesn't seem to hang for me on either 0.2.8 or 0.2.9.

0.2.8
Code:
dynamips --help
Cisco Router Simulation Platform (version 0.2.8-community-amd64/Linux stable)
Copyright (c) 2005-2011 Christophe Fillot.
Build date: Jul  8 2013 23:29:25
...

0.2.9
Code:
./dynamips --help
Cisco Router Simulation Platform (version 0.2.9-amd64/Linux stable)
Copyright (c) 2005-2011 Christophe Fillot.
Build date: Aug  2 2013 11:04:17
...

So I don't think that is the issue. Investigating further if I run dynamips whilst in /usr/bin I get the following
Code:
dynamips --help
Cisco Router Simulation Platform (version 0.2.8-community-amd64/Linux stable)
Copyright (c) 2005-2011 Christophe Fillot.
Build date: Jul  8 2013 23:29:25

Local UUID: 0d604753-3510-426d-90bd-83911e019a15

Unable to create lock file "c7200_i0_lock".
VM default: unable to create instance!
c7200: unable to create instance default!

The problem being the very first line, it cannot create the c7200_i0_lock file in /usr/bin/ (but would given root permissions). To make things even more confusing I can't get it to fail from within GNS3?

This is broader than I thought - I've started a new post at topic6748.html
