Hi Folks,

I've been trying in each version release to connect my VMware workstation with IOU switch using Cloud. In VMware, I have installed Checkpoint GAIA R77 to experiment checkpoint firewall with IOU device. OracleVM doesn't support GAIA operating system. Please do advice/recommend how to connect my VMware workstations with IOU.

Thanks,
Ashwin

Does your Windows OS even see the VMnet host network interfaces? VMnet1 and VMnet8 are created by default, so these should always be available.

Run the following command from a PowerShell console to see what VMnet host network interfaces are available on your Windows OS:
Code:
gwmi Win32_NetworkAdapter | ? name -like '*vmware*' | select Name

What is the output? For example, my output is:
Code:
Name
----
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet1
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet8
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet11
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet12
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet13
VMware Virtual Ethernet Adapter for VMnet14

So when I need to select a VMnet host network interface for the GNS3 cloud object ...

Thank you for the reply "mweisel" - Yes my VMware NICs are visible in Windows 8.1 OS. Though the Cloud lists my VMnet1,2, etc. I am not able to connect it to IOU, error attached in the screenshot.

Please advice how to make my VMware hosts and IOU connection successful.

Thanks,

Looks good. Remember to use only host-only vmnets for the Cloud object interface(s), and you also need to add a generic GNS3 switch between the Cloud object and IOU device (http://forum.gns3.net/post36266.html#p36266).

Hi "mweisel" - I am so thankful to your answer. It never strike me to try adding generic switch between cloud and IOU. I will give a try on this tomorrow and revert with the result.

Thanks again,
Ashwin

Glad to help. I've attached an image of a sample topology for reference.

The GNS3 server tunnel is misconfigured/disconnected between your Windows host and the IOU virtual machine.

Just a FYI, it's recommended to NOT run more than a single type 2 hypervisor at the same time because of possible VT-x conflict. It looks like you're running both VMware Workstation and VirtualBox from your screenshots. The VirtualBox method to resolve your error has been documented numerous times on this forum, so the search function is your friend. The following solution should help if you do happen to run the IOU VM on VMware.

Image

1. Get the IP address for the host interface, connected to the VMnet, that is shared with the IOU virtual machine. My IOU virtual machine is connected to the standard NAT (VMnet8) network, so I would run the following command from a PowerShell prompt:
Code:
(Get-NetIPAddress -AddressFamily IPv4 -InterfaceAlias *VMnet8*).IPAddress

The output:
Code:
192.168.67.1

2. Open the GNS3 preferences.
3. Select the GNS3 server node.
4. Select the Local server tab.
5. Select the IP address, from the output of step 1, for the Host binding dropdown.
6. Click the Apply button.

Image

7. From the VMware console, get the IP address from the Linux operating system containing the IOU images (IOU virtual machine). I'm running Ubuntu Server 14.04 with a single network interface (eth0), so I would run the following command from the console:
Code:
ip addr sh eth0 | grep -w inet

The output:
Code:
inet 192.168.67.10/24 brd 192.168.67.255 scope global eth0

8. Back in the GNS3 preferences, select the Remote servers tab.
9. Delete the existing entry.
10. Enter the IP address from step 7 for the Host field.
11. Select 8000 TCP for the Port field.
12. Click the Add button.
13. Click the OK button to save the configuration.

I'm so thankful for your guidance on making my things work. I was able to connect my VM hosts to IOU.. you made me little perfect in GNS3 V1.0 :-)

Just one thing - I configured HSRP between two IOUs, and the VM host(s) not able to reach the HSRP Virtual IP whereas it able to reach SVI interface. This was my IOU image

My HSRP Active/Standby configuration absolutely correct.. however not sure where the problem - then I removed the HSRP and made the SVI interface as gateway to the VMs, it worked.

Thank you very much again!
