Hi everyone,

I have this topology:

SW2 is a simple GNS3 ethernet switch.
Ubu2 is a VirtualBox guest.
R2 and R3 can ping each other, but it's impossible to ping TO or FROM Ubu2.
In another topology I have tried, two virtualbox guests on the same switch cannot ping each other either.
The only way I can make two virtualbox guests see each other is when I connect them directly. It's as if GNS3's ethernet switch blocked all communication between VBox guests.
I'm trying to make this work on my laptop; on my PC at work, everything works fine. Could this be a compatibility issue ?

My specs:
Windows 8.1
GNS3 0.8.6
VirtualBox 4.3.12

Thanks

Hi,

There is nothing wrong with your topology nor specs.

Just turn off your FIREWALL on host as well as guest if it's running, that should solve your issue.

I have the same problem i connect a router to a switch and from a switch to my PC's loop back interface but i can't get a successful ping either way.
I have tried to disable the Norton firewall but still no luck with pings.
I need this to work in order to study for the cisco CCP questions and ASA ASDM questions.

Did you disable Windows Firewall? Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Firewall -> Turn Windows Firewall On or Off

If that doesn't work, you need to post more info:

--------------------

Sorry, you put your original request in a VBox post so I made some assumptions.

You're trying to ping the router from your PC and not a VBox host, right? I'm not trying to talk down to you, but I don't know your skill level (it may far exceed mine for all I know) and it's best to start from the ground and work up.

Did you change the IP address on the MS Loopback Adapter that you are using to match the router's subnet?

-------------------------------------

Try configuring a Virtualbox Host Only Adapter for the cloud, then change the network settings of your VB guest OS to that same HOA.

VBox has built in DHCP, you can disable this per interface, but if your guest OS has an IP address that you didn't set and it's not an APIPA, then you need to manually reset the IP address to an address on the same subnet as the router's interface.
