I run a fully patched WinXP x64, 4GB RAM and dual core proc. GNS v3.07.

To make it work I had to adjust the path of the executables in the Preferences, since it was not pointing to the 32bit Program Files folder. Next, after 5 attempts I found a good idlepc value and I was able to add 13 routers (3640s) before system started to swap. I kept on adding more routers to see if it will crash. Reached 24 running routers and system was averaging 15% CPU and about 7GB ram. Gave up on trying to crash it...

Very stable - I recommend XP64.

I'm running the latest version of GNS3 on a 32bit version of Windows 7 and it seems to work well. However the issue I am having is that I can't successfully launch the Virtual PC executable that's detailed in the GNS3 guide. It doesn't seem to want to assign IP addresses or Subnets to PC1, PC2 or PC3 as per the instructions, but that's a different matter :).

P.S. Windows 7, Dual core processor, 2gb ram and a 5770 for the record.
