Post subject: Multiple Gateway problems in one computer
PostPosted: Sat Aug 28, 2010 11:13 pm
Yesterday, I found a problem when I was doing a GNS lab.

In that lab, I use microsoft virtual nic to simulate another computer and it is configured to acquire IP address from DHCP server. Also, there is a wireless NIC in my laptop and he gets IP from wireless router, which provide internet access.

So there are 2 different default gateway address for my winxp system. And I can not access internet. I tried to change the default gatway manually, it works to the alternative of the 2 networks.

How to address this problem - let the computer distinguish traffics according to different IP address or applications automatically and using different default gateways to forward data?

At least you can check what route your computer is using by using route print command. Check also metrics associated to routes. You can change metrics using route change command.

yeah, but it does really help when you wanna keep the 2 connections at the same time. evey with the metric, I can not tell the specific packet to go to which gateway.

You have to choose what subnets you want to be routed using wireless NIC and what networks via another NIC. You cannot use both for all traffic at the same time. Just put default route towards internet and more specific routers towards your lab.

Yeah, you are right.

There is still a conflict when I have to use the default route in GNS. but anyway, I just manually change the default route from time to time, it is annoying, but works.

Best regards

The problem solved by good IP addressing scheming.

Simply, using the same class IP address with subnetting, avoid using default route in the lab, then leave default route only available for internet.
