I am hopping this is a stupid (easily answerable) question.

First I installed the dynamips opensuse package. -maybe I should have just installed the GNS package?
Then I installed GNS3 via oneclick install

I open GNS3 to configure it and under dynampis setup it just has a "." for the location of dynamips. Apparently it is not there as when I click test it fails.

Where is dynamips?

(A moment ago I created this thread under "configuration", but then deleted it and put it here when I realized this is more an installation question)

Red888,

On UBUNTU dynamips gets installed to:
Code:
/usr/bin/dynamips
which is exactly what you would put into the GNS3 configuration box. Just poke around in your binary folders and see where it installed it OR use some command line tools:

Code:
[email protected]:~$ find / -name dynamips
find: `/lost+found': Permission denied
find: `/sys/kernel/debug': Permission denied
find: `/root': Permission denied
/usr/bin/dynamips
^C

the command I used was "find" the argument "/" is the root folder and everything inside of it, "-name" is the name of a file, "dynamips" is the file I'm looking for. You'll see I got some 'permission denied' notices but that's fine. I ran it as a regular user which means I won't be able to look inside folders I don't have permissions to. After this you see "/usr/bin/dynamips/" which is find telling me it found a file with the correct name and it's in the folder "/usr/bin/". Last you see "^C" which is me typing 'ctrl+c' so find will quit looking for a file named dynamips. Hope this has helped.

Yay! Its there and its working.

Another question. I left the working directory as /tmp is that ok or is there a more appropriate folder for it? If I recall from using dynampis in the past it can get pretty big depending on the size of the project.

Also thanks a lot for the helpful tips. I am clearly an inexperienced linux user and embarrassingly just realized I had the "Finding Files" page of my Opensuse bible open on my desk (last page I flipped to). Probably should have taken a gander at that first!

red888,

The working directory is fine to leave as "/tmp" and it's contents will be automatically deleted every so often. It depends on the version of Linux. So for Ubuntu I believe it's on boot, red hat is like a time based thing... Ya, I dunno. But at some point all the junk in /tmp is being deleted. Which is what you want and without having to worry about it.

Anytime on the help. Linux can be frustrating at first. Not because the learning curve is really that high but because you're so invested in another operating system. Accomplishing trivial tasks suddenly feels like climbing a mountain! Some people are going to tell you to go RTFM but not everyone.

Cheers.
