I've installed the latest GNS3 (0.8.2 all-in-one) on my Windows 7 64 bit machine (see gns3.ini config below).

For some reason, I'm not able to start dynamips. It is really frustrating, as I have tried numerous things. The following things I have tested (after reading through the forums):
  • manually point to the dynamips.exe location
  • installed GNS3 in 32 bit folder (x86) as well as in the 64bit Program Files folder on Windows
  • Totally disabled Windows firewall& virus scan software
  • Downloaded dynamips from the website and installed that version over the supplied one
  • Used other ports
  • Ran GSN3 as administrator (right click > Run as administrator)

In all conditions, dynamips is unable to start, when pushing the test button. Obviously, when I add a router or etherswitch, GNS3 hangs and gives the joyfull message "Failed to start dynamips".

In all conditions, I was able to start dynamips via the command line, with output & the command list. As seen via netstat -a TCP is listening on port7200 for the localhost.

As I have to use GNS3 for school, I am very very frustrated, because I have to hand in some exercises and Wireshark traces this week.

I hope someone can help me, or give additional tips, on how to fix this..

This is strange.

Have you tried another TCP base port (8000 for instance) in Preferences -> Dynamips?

Thanks for your tip.
I have tried your suggestion, unfortunately, with no result (see screenshot).

I have also added my firewall settings. All ports on TCP & UDP are allowed for Dynamips.

Some additional things I have done
  • disabled McAfee On Access Scan & Access Protection
  • tried the GNS3 standalone version
All changes still prevent dynamips from starting somehow..

Hi,

I think this must be an issue with your Windows or a program has modified some default settings. According to Google, the message [Errno 11004] getaddrinfo failed means there is an issue with DNS resolution or Proxy settings.

Can you try to change the IP/host binding setting in Preferences -> Dynamips -> Hypevisor Manager? Try localhost first.

You can also try to bind Dynamips directly with an 127.0.0.1 (the default GNS3 setting) to see what happen.

Code:
dynamips.exe -H 127.0.0.1:7200

Let me know the outcome.

Hi, I tried it just now, and wonderfully, it WORKS! (see screenshot below)

What is strange, is that I often get a pop-up, showing the dynamips.exe. Also, when rebooting the devices inside GNS3, the console window at the bottom shows a lot of errors..

Code:

I faced the same problem immediately after I installed GNS3 0.8.2 but realized that the problem is not with the program or Windows. If you install GNS3 without WinPcap, you will face this problem. Re-install GNS3 or install WinPcap and enjoy...

Hey, thanks for the tip :) Because I always install Winpcap I never encountered the issue ...
