Hello,

I was using image for 3745 router (c3745-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T14.bin - but it also happens for other versions like c3745-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T6.bin or c3745-adventerprisek9-mz.124-25d.bin) and had problems with saving running configuration. I made some changes, executed copy run start and saved the project before exiting GNS but after I started GNS again I was not able to restore configuration:
Code:
Router#copy startup-config running-config
%% Non-volatile configuration memory invalid or not present
Router#

Workaround for this problem is to save running configuration in flash memory before saving the project and exiting GNS.

Full version of command copy run start looks like this
Code:
copy system:running-config nvram:startup-config
which means that startup onfiguration is stored in NVRAM by default.

There is a bug in Dynamips that does not allow to load startup configuration for 3745 images despite startup configuration is visible
Code:
Router#copy start run
%% Non-volatile configuration memory invalid or not present
Router#dir nvram:
Directory of nvram:/

  150  -rw-           0                    <no date>  startup-config
  151  ----           0                    <no date>  private-config
    1  ----          15                    <no date>  persistent-data
    2  -rw-           0                    <no date>  ifIndex-table

155640 bytes total (153540 bytes free)
Router#

To save running configuration in flash, execute the command
Code:
copy system:running-config flash:conf1
or it's short version
Code:
Router1#copy run flash:conf1
Destination filename [conf1]?                  <<<hit ENTER to confirm>>>
Erase flash: before copying? [confirm]         <<<type n and DO NOT erase flash>>>
Verifying checksum...  OK (0x3FB)
745 bytes copied in 2.660 secs (280 bytes/sec)
Router1#
It is more convinient not to erease flash which takes some time.

After router/GNS3 restart, previous running configuration will not be loaded, there will be a question weather to enter setup mode and it won't be possible to load startup config with
Code:
copy start run
.
Fortunatelly command which loads saved startup configuration from flash
Code:
Router#copy flash:conf1 running config
Destination filename [running-config]?

745 bytes copied in 0.720 secs (939 bytes sec)
Router1#
should be succesfull.

It is also VERY IMPORTANT to remember to tick both options when creating new projects:
- Save nvrams and virtual hard drives
- Save IOS startup configurations

If you do not want to load previous configuration on every 3745 router every time you start GNS3 again, than you should use images for 3725 routers (e.g. c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T14.bin) which do not have such problems.

Looking forward,
Przemek.

Always great to have people contribute gems like this.

Don't forget though, after you copy flash:conf1 running-config you will still have to go to each interface and do a no shutdown

Hi!

First I want to thank you all for taking your time to share your knowledge! I am going through the CCNA course and this workaround has been a lifesaver, however, as things keep building up I find it extremely difficult to continue repeating these steps every time I need to work on a specific topology, especially when there are more than 5 routers. Has anybody found a way to make this work without having to perform this ritual? Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks in advance for any leads...

@PR-Gd0g - This is peculiar to the C3745 image. I suggest you use a different router, such as a C3725 or a C7200

A fix for the lost configuration files will be in dynamips 0.2.9
