IF I
1. add a router to my topology
2. start the router
3. open a console session to the router
4. stop the router
5. rename the router
THEN
1. I get:
Attachment:
Console port is already in use.jpg
Console port is already in use.jpg [ 16.58 KiB | Viewed 1766 times ]

2. When I click OK - the message AND the router disappears
[Curious note: If I add another router now, it gets console port 2004, not 2002 as I would have expected]

Tested on GNS3 8.3.1 on Linux and OSX 10.8

However, IF I
1. add a router to my topology
2. start the router
3. DON'T open a console session to the router
4. stop the router
5. rename the router
THEN
1. I have no problem, and the router renaming is reflected in the console session

This makes me think

1. The TCP connection for the console connection is not closed properly when the router is stopped (verified by netstat -n | grep 2001)
Code:
[email protected] ~ $ netstat -n | grep 2001
tcp        0      0 127.0.0.1:2001          127.0.0.1:53415         TIME_WAIT

2. that the default startup config is not applied until the console session is first initiated (not that this matters)

Further Investigation

IF I
1. add a router to my topology
2. start the router
3. open a console session to the router
4. stop the router
5. WAIT UNTIL THE TCP CONNECTION TO FOR THE CONSOLE CONNECTION HAS TIMED OUT
6. rename the router
THEN
1. I have no problem, and the router renaming is reflected in the next console session

On linux, if I do that, I have always "Would you like to enter the initial configuration dialog? [yes/no]"

I'm agree with you : GNS3/dynamips doesn't free the ports correctly

Ok, this should be fixed now :)
