0.8.4 RC3 on Ubuntu 13

I have these latest releases installed:

-dynamips 0.2.8 RC6
-qemu 1.5.0

Everytime I try to console to a running ASA with putty, I have the following result:
Putty Fatal Error: "Connection refused"

If I console to a 3725 for example, there's no problem.

I thought the issue might come from the qemu options: "-m 1024 -icount auto -hda /tmp/ASA_5520_1/FLASH -hdachs 980,16,32"

I also tried by inserting '-vga none' without success;

Any idea?

Ok, I found the mistake. This is fixed now.

why you did that ?!?!?!

You can either update the baseconfig or change the config on a device basis (wr & save in GNS3). I don't see any issue here.

KiB --> KB seems more appropriate

These values are power of 2. e.g. MiB = 1024 Kilobytes, MB = 1000 Kilobytes. Or did I totally missed something all these years?! Anyway, most of the time MB is also 1024 Kilobytes. Anyone can second that?

ASA has been forgotten

ASA doesn't support this (this is coded into Dynamips).

Deleting a device from the topology and saving:
configs\device-name.cfg not deleted

I prefer to keep the file in case of accidental device deletes.

Hiding the hostname on a host and saving:
hostname reappears

Bug that will be fixed in another version.

Using 'Suppr' key within a textbox:

Same.

-Superputty:
column width of first lines still significantly reduced

I consider this is a Superputty bug, can't do anything.

-Unbase feature for ASA projects:
I still do not get the point: does that mean we cannot share ASA projects without it (when operational)?

Yes, not so easy to share your ASA projects (or any Qemu based device) without it. The problem is that the unbase feature need a complete redesign and this is not gonna happen in the next version of GNS3.

-Ghost files:
still saved in working folder instead of Dynamips (or Qemu) working directory
why some 3725 ghost files are saved when only an ASA is running?

Should be fixed now.

I'm aware that the Dynamips working directory is now useless because we always use projects (temporary or user defined).

Not really... stable only when planets are aligned... and I like the simplicity and predictability of Putty.

What is the difference with the current way to start a terminal?

VPCS should be moved from its own folder to GNS3 folder along with all the other tools and also "cygwin1.dll"...

VPCS is already in its own folder but not with its own cygwin1.dll, I'll change that last thing.

Indeed. If I remove all options except "-icount auto", I have access to console output; how strange that is!
Unfortunately, now the ASA freezes with "Checking 'hlt' instruction"...

While trying to get a handle on the VirtualBox console settings I came across a possible bug (see below).

First, when and why would a user select "Enable console support" without also choosing "Enable console server?" What can be done with Enable console support if you don't also enable the server option? I've found that I need both options selected to connect to say Linux TinyCore using the console port (using telnet localhost 3501 for example).

The Bug: Tested on OS X and Linux:
If I only select "Enable console server" under VirtualBox Guest settings I get the following error when starting my Linux VurtualBox guest:
Linux_1: error from server 127.0.0.1:11525: 209-unable to start instance 'Linux_1'

"Enable console support" allows you to console to a VM using a software that can console to a serial interface/pipe (VirtualBox creates a pipe that represent the VM serial interface). On Windows the default setting is to use Putty to connect to this pipe and on Linux/OSX the default is to use a program called socat which you have to install first.

"Enable console server" starts a mini telnet server on top on the pipe and act like a relay or proxy between your telnet program and the pipe. "Enable console support" has to be enabled to use this option. I'll make some changes to grey out "Enable console server" when "Enable console support" is not activated.

There are a few other things I'll improve/fix for the next release.

Hope this answer your questions.

I read here http://7200emu.hacki.at/viewtopic.php?t=9074&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=330&sid=d035b2c5e9533e4f08d80f601cab38d4:
"GNS3 uses an earlier version of Qemu that has patches for UDP tunnels".

So if this is true, where do we get these patches and can we apply them to the last release of qemu (1.5.0) ?

This problem is in older versions too but maybe now is good time fix it.
If qemu is different name than qemu-system-i386 you can't start ASAs when reload topology.

Cause of this is because when you add ASA to topology following command will be run:
Code:
qemuwrapper qemu_path
qemuwrapper qemu_img_path
but when you reload topology these command not rerun and qemuwrapper only try find qemu-system-i386 command.

Founded this problem from debug logs when try run ASAs over 32-bit Ubuntu.

You don't need to apply any patch since Qemu version 1.1. The only reason we use older versions of Qemu is that they work better to emulate ASA and that they are stable on every platforms (Windows, OSX, Linux). We haven't had much success with the latest versions :(

OK, so I'll try with Qemu 1.1.
