I really need to solve an issue I keep encountering while making qemu 1.1.0:

Since I was able to make qemu 1.5.0 in exactly the same environment, I guess they changed the Makefile, but there are too many differences for me to be able to locate what needs to be imported in 1.1.0.

Any idea?

Looks as if there is a library missing that it needs to link against.

Did you run a ./configure script before you ran make?

Yes.
I read in the man pages that it is necessary to link with the -lrt options.
If I look into the Makefile, they are nowhere to be found. But I don't know where to add them.

Tried the GNS3 0.8.4 RC4 64-bit standalone version and the right click menu options of routers/switches/clouds don't work (RC3 had the same issue).

Steps:
  • open GNS3
  • add a router to the topology
  • right click on the router
  • try the various menu options

I reported this issue on Qemu official site, in the bug report page: https://bugs.launchpad.net/qemu/+bug/1193628

I had two answers: the first one suggests to investigate into the ASA crashes with latest qemu 1.5.0 release, which sounds very correct. ;)

The second one helped me patch 3 files, but then I ran into other issues which I managed to solve.

The four patched files for qemu 1.1.0 are attached below as a tar.gz.

Problem: the ASA crashes also with that version of Qemu!

EDITED: So far, I've tested qemu/ASA with KVM on Ubuntu.

One issue I came across with ASA842 - The Qemu FLASH image that GNS3 creates is in qcow2 format. I had problems with ASA reporting it couldn't access FLASH on 0.13.0 Win8 (and also 1.2.1 on OSX 10.6.8). I created a new FLASH with
Code:
qemu-img create FLASH 256M

This creates a raw uncompressed disk file 256M in size and it now accesses FLASH quite happily.

Maybe Qemu is running out of memory with ASA842 as it's showing around 1.2G of memory on my machine and (I'm speculating) it needs more memory to process a qcow2 formatted disk file. An OpenBSD VM in the same version of Qemu with 128M RAM works quite happily with a qcow2 disk.

Maybe we could have an option in a later GNS3 release to choose the type of Qmu disk file created for the ASA's?

Hurrah! At last! I was able to run and ping an ASA on GNS3 0.8.4-RC4/qemu 1.1.0 on Ubuntu 13.04. :)
Attachment:
ASA.JPG
ASA.JPG [ 79.46 KiB | Viewed 4270 times ]

The key lies within the options:

-KVM
-qemu: -icount 1
-kernel cmd line: -append ide_generic.probe_mask=0x01 ide_core.chs=0.0:980,16,32 console=ttyS0,9600 bigphysarea=65536 auto nousb no-hlt

There remains one issue and one question:

- with 6 interfaces configured, the ASA sometimes starts with 5 interfaces, sometimes with 6
- how can we configure GNS3 so that the FLASH file is read from the current project working directory and not the qemu working directory?

With qemu 1.5.0:

- the ASA starts correctly
- pinging other devices do not work

If you check the [x] Save nvrams and hard drives, then qemu FLASH files should be stored in the Working Directory off your project directory

@grossmj

Solaris problem persists in 0.8.4 - LOW priority (0.8.3.1 works fine).
Code:
File "/opt/csw/bin/gns3", line 83, in <module>
    import GNS3.Main

  File "/opt/csw/lib/python/site-packages/GNS3/Main.py", line 24, in <module>
    from GNS3.Application import Application

  File "/opt/csw/lib/python/site-packages/GNS3/Application.py", line 31, in <module>
    from GNS3.Workspace import Workspace

  File "/opt/csw/lib/python/site-packages/GNS3/Workspace.py", line 32, in <module>
    from GNS3.TipsDialog import TipsDialog

  File "/opt/csw/lib/python/site-packages/GNS3/TipsDialog.py", line 31, in <module>
    class TipsDialog(QtGui.QDialog, Ui_TipsDialog):

NameError: name 'Ui_TipsDialog' is not defined
