Hi all, maybe this is a newbie question. I searched in the forum, but i don't found a clear reply.

I make practice with this images, for STP,RSTP,VLAN, VTP and others things
c3745-spservicesk9-mz.124-19.image
c3640-jk9o3s-mz.124-16a.image
c3620-j1s3-mz.123-19.bin

And always i have an error. Someone can tell me what is the best image to emule switch?

Thanks a lot.
Condor.

@condor

Welcome to the forum. I hope you have great success with your studies.

My advice is to start with a 3725 image - forget the 3745, there is a problem saving configs with it

I suggest an image like c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.bin - this image works well with the "EtherSwitch Router" device in GNS3, and will automatically load up the baseconfig_sw.txt config giving you a couple of macros to helo with vlans creation, deletion and showing. If you can't get this image, make sure you get one with a "T" in the filename.

I also suggest that you use GNS3 v0.8.4RC4 - it has tighter integration with the baseconfig_sw.txt config - but remember it is not an official release yet

You can practice STP, VLANs and VTP with the c3725. It does not support RSTP.

Hey rednectar, thanks for your kind reply. I'll try my switch´s Labs with c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.bin and the beta version of GNS3.

Greetings and thanks again.
Condor.

RedNectar,
I too am working on ICND2 and have GNS3 0.8.2 working. I tried the EtherSwiitch router, using IOS c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T5.bin. I'm following the steps in CiscoPress ICND2 book for creating a VLAN. The step states "use vlan vlan-id" from the global config mode. The only options available for vlan configuration are "accounting" and "ifdescr". Would changing out the IOS with c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.bin make VLAN options for trunking, STP, etc. available?

Thanks
Glen

Your IOS should work Glen. When you create a new device, use the EtherSwitch Router. It has all the clever stuff pre-configured. When you boot you will see this:

Code:
***************************************************
This is a normal Router with a Switch module inside (NM-16ESW)
It has been pre-configured with hard-coded speed and duplex

To create vlans use the command "vlan database" in exec mode
After creating all desired vlans use "exit" to apply the config

To view existing vlans use the command "show vlan-switch brief"

Alias(exec)     : vl       - "show vlan-switch brief" command
Alias(configure): vlan X   - macro to create vlan X
Alias(configure): novlan X - macro to delete vlan X
***************************************************************

Your other possible options if you are studying ICND2 are to get a real switch or Cisco's Packet Tracer.

HTH,
Nick.

@glen As nickbee explains, there are a set of macros in baseconfig_sw.txt that you can use to help configure vlans, but for the "clever stuff" to be "preconfigured" you need to be using GNS3 0.8.4 RC3 or later - as you can tell by the name, this is NOT the official version, but for what you are trying to do, it is probably worth getting the latest RC (see topic6511.html)

In 0.8.2, you would have to set the baseconfig: file (in Edit | IOS Images and hypervisors: (double?)click on the c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T5.bin image, edit the baseconfig: field) to baseconfig_sw.txt AND THEN CLICK SAVE
(Phew - easier to upgrade to 0.8.4 RC4 - AND 0.8.4 will automatically decompress the .bin image into a .image file as well )

TBH I'm not sure if c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T5.bin actually supports the macros, but c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.bin does.

And the macros aren't great. Vlan creation is OK
(config)#vlan 10 !will work
(config)#vla 10 !- abbreviation of vlan WON'T work
(config)#novlan 10 !will work - but normally you would type no vlan
(config)#no vlan 10 !as you would normally remove a vlan WON'T work

Thanks Nick, but I got it figured out. Once I saw the example laid out in the book, it all clicked. I was "taught" to use "(config-if) switchport access vlan vlan-id to create a vlan which works.

Cheers,
Glen

rednectar

I just verified that the following commands work:

(config)#vlan 10 - creates vlan 10

(config)# no vlan 10 - deletes vlan 10

(config)# vla 10 - creates vlan 10

So to this point, the IOS appears to be working with the switch module.

Thanks folks for the help.

Well how about that! The macro commands are actually a hinderance - apart from the "vl" command!

I'll have to take your word on that Rednectar. I'm all for the KISS approach. I see in your signature a mention of GNS3 Workbench. How well does the VM of Ubuntu run on Win7? I think I have the workbench downloaded....somewhere.
