Most people use WIndows.
OS X used to be my favourite - in fact it was one of the main reasons I bought a Mac in 2009. But since the Lion and Mountain Lion OS "Upgrades", it is becoming increasingly harder to get GNS3 to run smoothly on OS X, so these days my preferred OS is Linux Mint (Cinnamon)
However, for a beginner, I would recommend sticking either with Windows (because the all-in-one install makes it easy) or run Linux in a Virtual Machine, such as the GNS3 WorkBench (which is sadly still using 0.8.2 GNS3 - update coming soon). You'll find the link to GNS3 WorkBench in my signature below.
The most important thing is that you have plenty of RAM and a decent processor.
