Use a tag name isn't more safe ?

Yes, I do agree a tag would be easier, safer and better.

Breakdown of the filenames:
  • "ilt_(version_tag)_(table_name)" - contains an instruction lookup table; keeping it avoids dynamips having to recreate the lookup tables every time it runs
  • "(platform_name)_(vm_name)_(name)" or "(platform name)_i(instance id)_(name)" - vm files:
    • name="lock" - lock file of the vm; deleted when the vm is destroyed
    • name="log.txt" - log file of the vm
    • name="rommon_vars" - rommon variables; related to the microcode, which replaces rommon; no idea how important this is or the consequences of deleting it
    • name="nvram" - non-volatile memory of nvram/ram device
    • name="bootflash" - non-volatile memory of bootflash
    • name="flash0" - non-volatile memory of flash device
    • name="flash1" - non-volatile memory of flash device
    • name="sram" - volatile memory of network interface
    • name="slot0" - non-volatile memory of pcmia device
    • name="slot1" - non-volatile memory of pcmia device
    • name="ram" - volatile memory of a ram device
    • name="rom" - non-volatile memory of ram device
    • name="ssa" - unknown type of memory of ram device; "Specific Storage Area"
    • name="agram" - unknown type of memory of ram device; probably volatile
    • name="iomem" - unknown type of memory of ram device; probably volatile
    • name="ram1" - volatile memory of ram device; same as "iomem"?
    • name="ios_cfg.txt" - dump of startup-config; can be triggered in the console
    • vm_name="ghost-(safe_image_name)-(host).ghost" - files of a vm instance for the ghost? no idea how this is supposed to work... it has ghost_status=VM_GHOST_RAM_GENERATE, normal vms have ghost_status=VM_GHOST_RAM_USE
  • "ghost-(safe_image_name)-(host).ghost" - ghost image file produced by Dynagen; also used as a vm name
  • "dynamips_log.txt" - dynamips log file

Could you beginning name of files that you think they can be deleted by "t_" and others by "f_" ? ("t_", "f_" or other)
Now, you are the expert of dynamips ;-)

From the perspective of dynamips, probably only the lock files are temporary... I don't think it's a good idea to add such a prefix.

For your particular case of making a backup of a project without closing GNS3, depending on the settings,
you probably want the config file (in another dir) and/or the nvram file (or rom file when nvram is emulated by the IOS).

PS - I'm hardly an expert, but I'm getting more and more familiar with dynamips. ;D

What do you suggest/think for this ?

For info. GNS3 deletes project files that match the following lines when closing a project/GNS3.
"*ghost*"
"ilt_*"
"*_lock"
"*_log.txt"
"*_rommon_vars"
*_ssa"

If my router has "ghost" as hostname ?

We haven't given up on your idea and are debating hard on the best approach: http://github.com/GNS3/dynamips/issues/26
