 Post subject: How to solve your Greyed-out Routers

Since this question keeps appearing on the forum, I decided it was worthy of a howto of its own!

If when you run GNS3 you routers are not available (see image), you will need to add some IOS images. This is normally done during the first-run wizard, but if you skipped that section or did not add your IOS Images, they will be unavailable.

To add your IOS Images, go to Edit

Select IOS Images and Hypervisors

Click the ... button beside the image file box and select your IOS Image. If it is compressed (.bin), you will be asked if you would to un-compress the image. This speeds up the loading the routers within GNS3.

At this point, you can use Auto Calculation to find a suitable IDLE-PC value. Once that is complete, click on Save and the IOS Image will be added to list.

Click on Close, then open the router panel, you will now see that the corresponding router has changed colour and can be selected.
