Hello,
I am a new user and just downloaded the latest version of GNS3 and have the same problem with console, as I read in this posts. I am using Windows XP SP3 and 7200 ISO Image.
When I have 3 routers everything works, I can run and configure all 3 routers. If I tried to create topology with 4 routers - only R1 and R2 consoles work - black window comes up for R3 and R4 and vanish fast.
I have an error that connection to R3 lost.
The RAM size for the image is 256 MB.
Any idea how can I fix this problem? Please, help.

elena,

If some emulators are working and others not, it sounds like a resources issue.

Have you made sure you are using a good idle-pc? If you don't know how, search for some articles - one you should find is The Illusive Art of Acquiring A Good Idle-PC Value
Check the output of the Dynagen console at the bottom of the screen - are there any error messages?
Try stopping all routers and starting R3 &/or R4 first.
Right click on R3 & find out what console port it is using
Then go to a cmd prompt and see if you can telnet to that port.
Since you are using a 7200, you can set the aux port as well (in GNS3 0.7.3) - then try and telnet to it from the cmd prompt

Finally, if you want to see a working system, get yourself a copy of VMware player and download the GNS3 WorkBench VM

Hello rednectar,
Thank you for your reply. I did the steps the you suggested and no luck.
Still 3 routers is ok, but can not add one more - system crashes - loosing connection is the error message.
Even with 2 routers CPU is high, and I tired to change different values for idle pc. Also, I tried to do the same with c2691 - same.
I think my computer may be too old, not enough memory for this program.
Have not tried VMware player yet.
Thanks

elena,

If you can't get the CPU utilisation down even after you have found a good idle-pc value, then you probably do need a faster PC. I have run the GNS3 WorkBench VM on a P4 3.2GHz with just 3GB of RAM, but if you have more than 2 routers it starts showing the problems you have been having!

RedNectar,
Thank you for your help.
I am sure now that I need faster computer.
The good thing that I can try some commands with 3 routers. It's better then nothing.
Thanks again. Elena

Hi,
first of all is there any reason why you use 7200 series? They are more "CPU eaters" than any others - so you need really powerful CPU to run them all. For this reason it is recommend to use 26xx series.
If IdlePC doesn't help you can try BES to reduce CPU utilization: http://mion.faireal.net/BES/ which should work for WinXP.
You can save RAM if all the routers are the same models and you enable Ghost IOS feature in GNS3 settings - all routers will be shared one region in memory for IOS instead of many identical copies of IOS in RAM.
See more at Dynagen tutorial:
http://www.dynagen.org/tutorial.htm#_Toc193248009

Cheers,

Hello Brezular,
Thank you for your respond. I am using c7200 because c2691 sometimes eating more cpu even when I Ghost IOS feature is enabled (in the latest version of GNS3 it's enabled by default).
I also tried to use BES application from http://mion.faireal.net/BES/ - it helps. Now I can run up to 5 routers at one time. That is great. But I still need to configure each router separately, save configuration and then run my project.
Thank you.

I have this same problem currently. It seems to be a result of a bad IOS. If I use any of the others it works fine.
