Hi,

I've just tested GNS3WorkBench on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - this is great news, because this is a LTS (Long Time Support) version of Ubuntu.
(it also works on Llinux Mint 16 (32 bit))

So here's the script package - you can use it in two ways
A) To install GNS3 WorkBench on your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS (32 bit works - may be problems with Qemu on 64 bit)
B) To install just GNS3 on your Ubuntu 14.04 LTS - and optionally insall all of these things as well:
* Updates your Linux OS with the latest patches and adds the repository where GNS3 resides.
* Downloads and installs the scripts to enable support for ASA and Juniper
* Downloads and installs the following:
. NIO tap adapter
. Qemu
. open-ssh server
. CPU Limit utility
. htop
. Oracle VirtualBox emulator
. Wireshark
. terminal applications Xterm, PuTTY, Konsole, ROXTerm
. dynamips
. GNS3
. the Virtual PC Simulator (VPCS)
* Downloads
. a specially prepared Qemu freeBSD image for use with Juniper routers
. a collection of Virtual Box VMs that are used in the GNS3 WorkBench
. GNS3 WorkBench and GNS3 Vault exercises and sets up the default settings in GNS3

* If you have the ASA image available, it will be prepared for use in GNS3
* if you have Juniper router image available, the script then takes you through the tedious Juniper router install process.

* Fixes file permissions so you can run the labs smoothly

* Updates the GNS3 WorkBench and GNS3 Vault Folder and Desktop Icons

Of course if you choose all of the options - you will have ended up installing GNS3 WorkBench :)

Installation Insructions:
Hint#1: If you have a copy of asa84.bin in your ~/GNS3/Images/ASA directory, the installer will prepare it for use with GNS3
Hint#2: If you have a copy of a Juniper router image - eg jinstall-9.6R1.13-domestic-signed.tgz in your ~/GNS3/Images/Junos directory, the installer will guide you through the preparation of the image for use with GNS3

Download this file
Attachment:
File comment: GNS3 and GNS3 WorkBench installer for Ubuntu 14.04 and Linux Mint 16
installGNS3WB.tar.gz [11.3 KiB]
Downloaded 432 times
and save it somewhere.

Extract the files to a convenient place - eg ~/Downloads

Open a terminal session and chnage directory to the location eg
cd ~/Downloads

Run the insall script
Code:
./installGNS3WB.sh

Answer y or n as you go through to choose each option. Some take a while.

or if you are REALLY BRAVE
Code:
./installGNS3WB.sh -full

which assumes you want to say "yes" to EVERYTHING

If you skip a section, or it doesn't work, you can run the script again.

Final caveat
If you install the GNS3 WorkBench exercises, it will overwrite your ~/.gns3/gns3.ini file - which is where your image and idle-PC information is kept AND it assumes that you already have the following images in the following locations:
~/GNS3/Images/c3640-ik9o3s-mz.124-25a.image
~/GNS3/Images/c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.image
~/GNS3/Images/c7200-adventerprisek9-mz.150-1.M.image
~/GNS3/Images/c7200-advipservicesk9-mz.151-4.M4.image

Sorry to hear you are having a problem. I have no idea why your system would get into a login loop after installing GNS3WB. However, this answer extracted from from http://askubuntu.com/questions/314362/u ... login-loop and http://askubuntu.com/questions/223501/u ... login-loop may help

Quote:
Press Ctrl+Alt+F3 and login into the shell.

Try deleting $HOME/.profile

- the following command should do it:

rm $HOME/.profile

You may wish to re-create the .profile file - see the http://askubuntu.com/questions/314362/u ... login-loop for a default config

Won't have time for about 2 weeks. But have started working on it already - but for the next 2 weeks I'll only have rather unreliable and VERY limited 3G access to the internet - impossible to upload large files

Thanks for your great work.

I am wondering if it is possible to upgrade using a combination of your script and my previous WorkBench VM?

I have zipped the entire /home/user folder to copy to a new Ubuntu 14.04 VM. I was hoping to unzip the files into the new Ubuntu 14.04 VM /home/user and then run the script to save having to download all of the images again.

Thanks

Yes. You can run a script - but the scrip on your system has a problem downloading VirtualBox, so instead download this archive, extract it and run the ./installGNS3WB.sh script (hot off the press this afternoon) - but read the rest of this first.

Go ahead, zip /home/user - but don't bother with the /home/userGNS3/WorkBench or /home/user/GNS3/Vault directories. Or copy them across then delete them - the latest version has three advantages:
  1. There is a new monster exercise called ICND1 Readiness test (see this blogpost about that - apologies if the link doesn't work yet - I haven't finished the article yet)
  2. I have rewritten all the help screens to be a little more informative about the Snapshot system
  3. I have completely rewritten the script to change your firmware images if you need to do that

Before you run the install script, you may wish to back up your /home/user/.gns3/gns3.ini file. Making a copy through the file manage will call it gns3 (copy).ini.
This is really only necessary if you have added additional images to your gns3 - but since there is a good chance you've done that, I'll explain how to preserve these later.

When you run the installGNS3WB.sh script from a terminal window, choose option a. Interactive install.

The script will make sure you have the latest versions of Wireshark, qemu, VirtualBox and the other bits you might need/want including of course dynamips and GNS3. It is also smart enough to realise you already have the qemu VMs in place, but NOT smart enough to realise you have the VirtualBox VMs.

SO, since you have restored your /home/user/ directory already, you can save about 300MB of downloading by saying "n" at the following stage:
Quote:
Stage 21 on Thu Aug 7 21:09:52 EST 2014 --/installGNS3WB.main.sh 1.5
:-Download Virtual Box VMs used in GNS3 WB exercises [Recommended - allow 15 mins]
- Needed to run Vyatta routers and Linux VMs under Virtual Box in GNS3
WorkBench. Optional, but there may be some spurious GNS3 configuration
left in your GNS3 install if not completed
Download & Expand Virtual Box VMs used in GNS3 WB exercises? y/n[y]n
Virtual Box VMs not installed

And when you say "y" to the following stage:
Quote:
Stage 22 on Thu Aug 7 21:12:14 EST 2014 --/installGNS3WB.main.sh 1.5
:-Download GNS3 WorkBench and GNS3 Vault Labs/Exercise [HIGHLY RECOMMENDED]
-If you skip this step you will still have an awesome GNS3 appliance, but
without the "WorkBench" exercises
WARNING: Your existing GNS3 settings (in /home/user/.gns3/gns3.ini) will
be overwritten by this process and set to a standard GNS3 WorkBench
install. If you have added images and idle-PC values to your GNS3
install, they will be lost, so you may wish to backup your
/home/user/.gns3/gns3.ini file before continuing.

Download GNS3 WorkBench and GNS3 Vault Exercises? y/n[y]y

Then the new exercises etc will be downloaded, and - like it says, your gns3.ini will get clobbered. But I told you to make a backup of that earlier - I'll assume you called it gns3 (copy).ini

Once the install is finished, you can get your old images back by opening both your /home/user/.gns3/gns3.ini and gns3 (copy).ini in a text editor. In the copy, find the section that begins:
[IOS.images] and ends in a blank line.

Copy this section, including the heading and blank line, and paste it in your "replaced" gns3.ini - save it and you should be good to go.

If you are using a different image than the c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.image that I used to create the labs, then run the /home/user/GNS3/WorkBench/Scripts/changeFirmwareImage.sh to do so. It will look in your gns3.ini file to see what images you have told gns3 about, and let you choose one to replace the c3725-adventerprisek9-mz.124-15.T10.image in all the topology.net files in the WorkBench path (it won't touch your own projects)

Let us know if you are successful, and of course also let us know if you have problems.

Chris,

Sorry it has taken so long but I got snowed under with work stuff.

I tried following your instructions and had two issues. One with the installation of VirtualBox and one with creating the desktop icons.

VirtualBox Error:

Install VirtualBox? y/n[y]y
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package virtualbox-4.3
E: Couldn't find any package by regex 'virtualbox-4.3'

There was a problem installing virtualbox-4.3
Try again y/n [y]

Icons Error:

There is more but I just added a few lines as they are all basically the same.

I manually installed VirtualBox and I currently only have the folders of shortcuts on the desktop. No GNS3 launcher though.

Thanks
