Hello friends,

I created this OSPF topology to put in one page altogether about it, and it worked well for me.

Hope you can enjoy too

your comments are appreciated.

I just had a simple question.
Why so many loopback interfaces on each router?
What purpose does multiple loopbacks on the same router serve?

Thanks

Hello,
I am new member on this Forum,

In OSPF, and EIGRP summerization is an important part as. we need multiple lookback interface to create routes on the router and summerize the routes so OSPF, and EIGRP will work efficiently. I hope this clear you why we need multiple loopback on the routers.

thanks,

I have a question could you provide in this forum on what PC configuration you are running this:

processor / Ram / OS

for example I have :

intel P4 C 2,8Ghz HT / 2,5 GB ram / ubuntu 9.04

with 3x3640 running a lot of cpu is used,
may be I could go up to 5 or may be 6

but 11 3660 you must have a powerfull cpu and running on ubuntu no but which then ?

I have tried your topology.

The only change I made is I replaced 3660 by 3640, I had an IOS and I have remarked that emulating lesser performing routers consummes less PC ressources.

Before I never went further than 4 routers so I prefered a to use a lesser performing router.

on my :
intel P4 C 2,8Ghz HT / 2,5 GB ram / ubuntu 9.04

it worked !

beautifull result, I think also the fact that you used several localhost:7200, localhost:7201, localhost:7202 helped, I can see 3 dynamips processes in my ubuntu system monitor, each using the equal amount of processor cpu and ram.

I did not even change your idlepc values, though on a different router (3640 <> 3660) and different PC (I don't know yours), a different OS (I assume you were on windows).

on my PC the cpu is close to 100 % (99% in fact my P4 is with hyperthreading so ubuntu shows me 2 of them : 100 %, 98%), the memory used is 1,5 GB out of my 2,5 GB (in 2 banks for HT).

I think ubuntu consumes less ram with gns3 and an equivalent lab with windows [edit] at least based on my experience.

I am not shure it is relevant my ubuntu works with / and /home partitions formatted in ext4.

congratulations, beautifuul work, beatifull lab !

Nice topology, needs a bit of work.

For those who are struggling on CPU usage, you can use this software:

http://mion.faireal.net/BES/

Download it and limit dynamips executable. When the topology has more than 4 routers, you will notice that 2 or more dynamips will be runnig, you can limit them as well. The problem is that this software can only limit up to 3 processes, but for most topologies, it's really sufficient.

Good luck with your labs.
