Are routers supposed to dynamically learn about networks from areas outside of the ones they are actually in?
I've got a topology where R1 is exclusively in Area 0 but after all has been configured, it dynamically knows about others areas' networks too.
Should this be happening?

yes, it's normal that area 0 learns the routes from other area (f.e. area 1), because it's the backbone area that "connect" the areas with eachother.
