Do the new images work with GNS3 0.8.1? I can't seem to get the images to boot up at all.

UPDATE: Micro Core Linux boots fine, but TinyCore does not. It would seem the size of Tinycore is greatly reduced in the new version. The 3.4 release was like 23MB and the 3.8 release is only 5.3MB. Is that right??

Thanks for letting me known. As a temporary solution use a 4shared download link above, instead of sourceforge link available on GNS3 Download page.
I will write Jeremy about it.

The uploaded tinycore was corrupted. I have re-uploaded it.

This should be ok now.

Are there any quality appliances / Linux images pre-configured with Quagga (RIP/OSPF/BGP/...) ?

Since VBox 4.2 supports up to 36 vNICs per VM, such Linux router becomes a reality.

Of course, they are available. You can build whole Campus network with it - check a tutorial I wrote.

http://brezular.wordpress.com/2011/11/23/part3-openvswich-campus-model-with-layer2-access-built-with-open-source-applications/

Here is my own Qemu Microcore image. It contains a last Quagga version -0.99.20, Openvswitch 1.2.2, tcpdump, iproute2, keepalived 1.2.2. Other extensions such as iperf, d-itg, iptables, bonding and many others can be installed from repository.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/gns-3/files/Qemu%20Appliances/linux-microcore-4.0-openvswitch-1.2.2-quagga-0.99.20.img/download

This image perfectly shows us the power of open-source software. Everyone can build his own router/switch and get experience with networking on Linux. Yo don't need any special hardware, plus projects such as GNS3 helps you to emulate complete topology with many Linux nodes so you don't need hardware at all.

Thanks for all the great work. Is there a way to get microcore image to accept telnet sessions using the Console menu command just like other components within GNS3 do?

How do you assign an IP address to the Qemu host, I tried using "ifconfig eth0 A.B.C.D netmask A.B.C.D" and I got a "permission denied".

Nice tutorial. But to make IP address settings permanent after restart you should add following line to /opt/bootlocal.sh

ifconfig eth0 10.0.0.10 netmask 255.0.0.0 up
route add default gw 10.0.0.1

Then call a backup script from commad line:

/usr/bin/filetool.sh -b
