Hello everyone:

I am new to networking and learning some things about this concept on my own. I am doing some independent studying and have a question along the way.

If there is a firewall between two routers can the routers still be able to communicate with each other? For example if router A and router B have a firewall in between them can they ping each other's interfaces?

I have attached a image to help illustrate my point.

Thanks.

It would depend on the setup of the firewall. Firewalls can be configured to block/allow certain types of traffic/certain ports etc. So in relation to ping, if the firewall was blocking ICMP then the ping would fail.

so is it possible that R1 and R2 can ping each other?

Will I have to set up some kind IP routing on the firewall for R1 and R2 to ping each other? So does that mean a firewall can route information to other different networks like a router?

Yes you are correct, you will need either routing or NAT.

Most firewalls are built on top of a routing sytem.

Awesome!

Thanks for the reply claydon_dan!

You have answered my question.

I still have much to learn about the basics of routers and firewalls.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my question!

Well I can highly recommend the resources over at http://www.freeccnaworkbook.com. There is a wealth of knowledge there that should help you out. There are also lots of videos available on youtube as well, which can be very useful for seeing how various scenarios are carried out.
