Post subject:  Latest versions of Dynamips/QEMU

Hi All,

I'm building a new GNS3 host for my LAB so I can do some study. I've experimented with Mint and Ubuntu and at this stage I think I'm going to stick with Ubuntu.

I am running it on a ESXi 5.1 box using virtual switches to give me my separate segments. (DMZ, Inside, Outside, etc).

I'm looking for details of where to get the correct versions of Dynamips and Qemu. I've been following the build process from these two sites; ... nt-13.html ... igure.html

The version of Qemu I'm looking for is one that is suitable for running Cisco ASAs.

I'm sticking to 32-bit OS at this stage, so Dynamips and QEMU would need to be 32-bit compatible.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Further to the above, I'm now using Dynamip 0.2.8 RC7 from;

My only issue now is finding the correct version of QEMU to run an ASA. I tried the version at "" but GNS3 is complaining it's not patched.

Once a QEMU is installed, is it possible to tell it to use a different version?

For running on any Ubuntu based distro (Ubuntu, Linux Mint etc), I would recommend taking a look at our PPA (Private Package Archive), which I have recently updated to include Dynamips 0.2.11. Using the PPA will also greatly simplify the process of upgrading Dynamips (and GNS3 & VPCS).

Details on how to use the PPA can be found here: topic6666.html

The packages on are a little out of date at the moment... as I've been working hard to get the versions inside Debian and Ubuntu updated, but I will endeavor to get them updated shortly!

With regards to qemu... Different people have had success with different versions... and I'll admit I've completely lost track of what versions work and which don't!

I have had various results with many of the 'nix distributions with GNS3 and QEMU.
You may install many versions on your system. GNS3 just needs the path to the executable for the version you wish to run.

My experiences are mixed. For GNS3 any recent distro will work. I'm currently testing LMDE-201403, Ubuntu 13.10 and Ubuntu 14.04. Using the ppa for GNS3 is a great way get the current versions of GNS3, dynamips and vpcs.

Now, for QEMU. The patched version .14 had no issues under GNS3. This is still running on my Ubuntu 12.04 and works great.
Using the newer version 1.6.2, 1.7.0 and now RC 2.0 all will run, but there's a catch. While I've read others managed to get these run run directly from GNS3, my experiences are different.

There seems to be some anomaly with It builds the correct command line, but the instance never completes the initialization. I have to go to a terminal window look for and copy the command (ps aux | grep qemu) then kill the current process and paste the command back in the terminal window and hit enter. I'm stuck with an open terminal running qemu, but it works. Though you have to remember that part of the qemu process is running outside of GNS3 control.

I haven't been able to dig to the heart of this issue. As the command issued by GNS3 is exactly the same as what I am issuing in a terminal window. I believe it is related to the subprocess.Popen used to start QEMU, but again, I haven't found the issue yet.

Hope this helps.
